Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, May 8, 2022. As we all think about our mothers on this special and important day, we need to remember how important mothers are to us and to the world at large. I can’t help but think about those people in our culture, seems like a small minority, but growing, that have a hard time defining what gender mothers are.
Recently, during the confirmation of hearing of Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) asked a simple question that most kindergarten students could answer with robust confidence. What was that question? Here it is, “Can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman’?”
I believe to the surprise of the senator from Tennessee—and to most of the world—Ms. Jackson would not answer the question. I’m not sure why she wouldn’t answer such a question, but this is another sign of our times. The current day we are living is none like we’ve seen. However, Solomon did write there’s nothing new under the sun (Ecc.1:9).
The assault that’s happening right now in our nation is an attack on the structure that is clearly divinely inspired. The creation account lays out God’s design for humanity. Genesis 1:27 tells us plainly, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” This is the bedrock of all society and no matter how much the world tries to deny it, there is no way possible to move away from one’s biological gender. This is made evident by those who are seeking to redefine or change their God-given gender.
For one to move away from God’s design is to cut oneself off from God’s blessings. What I’m referring to here is the blessing of being a mother. The one person God created to be suited for this special role is the woman. God has uniquely designed the woman’s nature, physical makeup, and temperament to be a mother. God’s design for woman is, to be the perfect complement to man (Gen. 2:18), to bear and nurture children (Gen. 4:1, 1 Tim. 2:15), to be the heart of the family (Prov. 31), to raise godly offspring (Prov. 31:28, 1 Tim 2:15), and to be the principal worker of the home (Titus 2:5). This short list is not exhaustive, but a clear sampling of what God’s word says about the role of the woman.
Regardless of what the world, politicians, or the culture might not be able to say, we as the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, know exactly what to say, and we’re not even biologist. We are God’s people who have God’s word, and it teaches us all truth. We know exactly what a woman is, and we know God’s design for woman is motherhood. The assault on gender is an assault upon God. Instead of assaulting God’s design this coming Sunday, we want to celebrate mothers because of God’s special place for them in His world (Ps. 24:1). So, please do not forget to honor the mothers in your life by celebrating them as God’s wonderful and perfect gift.
