Serving the Lord in the Local Church
The pinnacle of Christian virtue is loving God and serving others. Many Christians understand and affirm this most basic Christian attitude; however, we often fail to live it out as our Lord did so beautifully.
When we look to our Lord, our perfect example, we see selfless service modeled. Paul speaks of this most clearly in Philippians 2:3–7:
“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.”
The primary hindrance to your serving in the local church is not your schedule, your lack of giftedness, or your availability. Let me say this as graciously as I can: it is a failure to walk in humility, considering others as more important than yourself.
We are often inclined to do only what is comfortable and easy, rather than to serve others on Sunday. Yet, there is always a place for us to serve the Lord.
Years ago, when Grace Bible Church was just a baby church, people were serving in multiple areas. We had folks serving as greeters and musicians, serving communion, and serving coffee to a new visitor. We all were doing double duty for the glory of God. Today, we are a growing, vibrant body of saints, and there is no reason we should have gaps in this church.
If you are not currently serving somewhere at Grace, please take time to find a place to serve the Lord.
